Reflexology Harley Street

At our Harley Street clinic combined massage, acupressure and reflexology techniques are used to work through tension, opening blocked channels to restore free flow of energy throughout the entire body. As part of this process, attention is diverted from over-active minds towards relaxing sensations within the feet, increasing overall body awareness and a sense of being well grounded.

Why are feet so important?

Having been a convert for some time, I am often surprised by others’ attitude towards feet. Often people seem to give their feet almost no consideration at all, even viewing them as ‘unclean’ in some way, and can be quite put off by the thought at having them touched. It is a shame that many do not appreciate the tremendous value in stimulating circulation in this area, let alone the deeply relaxing and enjoyable sensation experienced through massage of the feet.

The foot is the skeletal base of our structure & our connection with ground. However we move our feet directs movement throughout the entire the body.

It is worth considering that, due to the effects of gravity, the circulation is consistently drawn downward and has to conduct a 180° turn at the feet. This makes them an excellent area to pick up on imbalances and also to redress them. This is why I try to incorporate foot-work into most of my treatments. An alternative to this could be some massage movements around the ankles and upper surface of the feet, if preferred.

Six key acupuncture meridians may be accessed at the feet; their acupressure points affect the entire body’s function through this meridian system which beautifully complements reflexology and massage techniques.

Reflexology

Reflexology is centred on the principle that the health of each organ of the body is reflected in a corresponding zone within the feet. Relieving areas of tension within the feet can therefore have a deeper impact on the body as a whole.

One way of appreciating how Reflexology works is to understand the ‘zone theory’ that it is based on. Imagine that the body is sectioned throughout, into ten slices or zones, from head to toe; one slice for each finger and toe.

These sections are similar to roads and the energy flow through the organs within each zone – for example, the digestive system – is similar to traffic travelling along each pathway. If an organ is not functioning correctly, this is akin to either speeding traffic or congestion. In either case, the effects are felt at the end of the road or zone: the feet.

The effect of gravity on the body will tend to show up inconsistencies of energy flow most potently at the furthest point downward along each zone: again, the feet.

Our feet can therefore be considered a valuable tool that can be used as a guide as to what might be going on within the body. More importantly, work on the reflex points of the feet can have a dramatic effect on the corresponding organs and energy systems within the body, aiding them to function more efficiently. This is a gentle and non-invasive way of alleviating the symptoms of dis-ease at their root cause, as well as improving overall health.

Reflexology is a holistic treatment, as all the body systems are worked from their reflex points on the feet, although extra attention is given to those areas that show an imbalance. Most people find this to be a deeply relaxing experience, as well as attaining some relief from symptoms they may have been experiencing.
